I don’t tend to overpack, but when going on holiday there are a few things I always take with me — and a sarong is one of them.
It’s one of those pieces that ends up being far more useful than you expect. I reach for mine constantly, whether I’m by the pool, heading to lunch, or just trying to feel a bit more covered.
One piece, more uses than you’d think
What I like most about a sarong is how easy it is.
It doesn’t take up space, it dries quickly, and it works with everything you’ve packed. You don’t have to think about it — you just pick it up and it does the job.
And on holiday, that’s exactly what you want.
How I wear mine
In the short video below, I show you how I like to style my sarong.
As a skirt
This is how I wear my sarong most.
Tied simply at the hip over a swimsuit or bikini — something you can throw on in seconds and not think about again.
It’s what I wear to walk up for lunch, to sit by the pool, or when I want a bit more coverage without feeling overdressed.
And when I’m not wearing it, it usually ends up as something to lie on.
As a dress
If I want to feel a bit more put together, I’ll tie my sarong as a halter at the back of the neck.
It’s such an easy shape, with a soft opening at the front that feels feminine without trying too hard. One of those looks that just works, especially in the heat.
As a head wrap
On really hot days, I often twist my sarong into a turban.
It keeps the sun off your hair, and makes everything feel a bit more pulled together — even when you’re not.
Watch how I do it in the video below.
As a shawl
By the evening, my sarong becomes something else again.
Draped over your shoulders when the temperature drops, wrapped around you when you’re sitting outside, or even used on the plane when the air con is too much.
It’s one of those things you’re glad you have, even if you didn’t plan to use it that way.
Why it always ends up in my beach bag
Because it just super easy...
It’s not something you pack for one specific reason — it’s the piece you reach for throughout the day without thinking.
And those are always the things worth bringing.
