The Sitting Room in Spring – Lighter Days, Still Warm Evenings

Spring has felt like a long time coming this year — I almost don’t want to say it out loud in case it disappears again.

After such a wet and grey start to the year, even a few brighter afternoons feel like something to hold onto. The windows are being opened again, just enough to let the air move through the house. There’s a freshness that wasn’t there a few weeks ago, and the sitting room feels lighter because of it.

You might be feeling that shift too.

That quiet urge to clear a little space. To fold away some of the heavier layers. To let the light in — without losing the warmth that makes a room feel safe.

The sitting room is always where I begin.

Letting the Room Breathe

At this time of year, I’m not trying to remove warmth. I’m just trying to remove heaviness.

I still want softness underfoot. I still want candles lit in the evening. I still want that feeling of being held by the room.

But I want the space to breathe.

A thicker throw folded away.
A darker cushion replaced with something softer in tone.
Windows opened just enough to let the air shift.

It’s not about starting again.
It’s about lightening the weight without losing the comfort.

Sheepskin, But Lighter

The new Quatro Sheepskin Rug is a recent addition — both to our collection and to our sitting room — and it’s already changed how we use the space.

In the afternoon light, it feels soft and almost luminous. The natural tones lift the room rather than weigh it down.

If I’m honest, it’s become the most claimed spot in the house.

Farley — our cocker spaniel — found it first. And the girls seem just as happy sprawled out there too. There’s no longer a quiet negotiation over the comfy corner of the sofa. Everyone drifts to the rug instead.

Especially if the open fire is alight.

You sit down “just for a minute” and somehow end up staying there.

That’s the kind of comfort I’m always looking for — soft underfoot, warm when the evening cools, but light enough to belong in spring.

The Double Sheepskin Rug, draped over the armchair, adds another layer without adding weight. It’s there when you want to curl up, but it doesn’t overwhelm the room.

Light by Day, Firelight by Evening

Even now, we’re still lighting the fire some evenings.

It’s gentler than mid-winter — the flames lower, the room brighter — but that warmth as the light fades still feels important.

The new Sheepskin Pouffe sits beside the fire, somewhere to rest your feet while you talk, read, or simply sit.

A hand-dipped candle in one of our brass candle holders.

A favourite stoneware coffee cup warming your hands.

Sheepskin Slippers tucked beside the sofa.

Spring light by day.

Soft firelight by evening.

You don’t have to choose between fresh and warm. You can have both.

Refining, Not Replacing

If you’re feeling that familiar spring restlessness — the urge to clear, to open, to refresh — start gently.

Bring forward the pieces that feel natural and warm to the touch.

Layer sheepskin rugs underfoot so bare floors don’t feel cold in the mornings.

Keep a soft shearling rug over your chair for evenings when the air cools.

Light a candle, even when there’s still daylight outside.

Spring doesn’t have to mean stark.

At The Small Home, it simply means comfort that breathes.

Pieces that soften edges, catch the light, and quietly hold the room together — without demanding attention.

That’s the shift we’re making here.

And perhaps it’s one you’re craving too.
