When we say that our sheepskin moccasins are handmade, we mean handmade — every single process.
Each pair is made from start to finish by one artisan, using traditional skills passed down through generations. Our moccasins are made in a small mountain village in southern Poland, close to Zakopane — the country’s winter capital — where sheepskin craft has been part of life for centuries.
Meet Grazyna, one of our makers who has been sewing Sheepskin Moccasin Slippers for The Small Home for over ten years.
A Life in Craft
“I live with my husband in a small village in the Tatra Mountains,” Grazyna tells us. “I’m a mother of nine and a grandmother of seventeen. I’ve been sewing slippers for 30 years — I was taught by my mother-in-law.”
It takes Grazyna an entire day to make one pair of slippers by hand. Before the stitching begins, she first prepares the soles — a process that can take at least two days on its own.
“Ayshea from The Small Home provides all of the sheepskins and the embroidery yarns,” she explains. “I start by cutting the skins by hand, then I do the embroidery — that’s what I like best. All you need is thread, and you can do it outside in the garden.”
Strength and Skill
Once the uppers and soles are ready, each piece is stitched together entirely by hand. “This is the hardest part of the job,” Grazyna says. “You need strong hands to get the needle through thick sheepskin and leather.”
It’s a process that demands patience and precision — and the result is something deeply personal. No two pairs of Sheepskin Moccasin Slippers are ever quite the same.
Keeping a Craft Alive
“I’m so happy that people like to wear our slippers and appreciate the work that goes into making them,” Grazyna says. “This craft is slowly dying out because it’s hard work and very time consuming.”
Her favourite style is our Oyster Moccasin, admired for its simple, elegant colour palette.
“When my children were small, I made slippers while looking after them,” she smiles. “Now, when I’m not working, I love to spend time with my family and look after my flowers — that’s my hobby, it helps me relax.”
Every stitch tells a story of care and tradition — of a slower way of making that values hands, heart, and heritage.
Our handmade sheepskin moccasin slippers are more than just something to wear at home; they’re a piece of enduring craft, shaped by generations of skill.
